thoughtbot: Every developer runs into the dreaded nil object error: NoMethodError in Ruby, AttributeError in Python, and NullPointerException in Java. These errors are one of the largest sources of bugs. Even most static languages allow nil objects to silently pass as any type of object, and it’s just as…

Resque::Failure::Multiple Notifier with Postmark
I’ve bumped into a situation where my team needed to be notified of resque failures via email. We’re using Postmark as our mailer and we wanted to be able to retain failures in the web interface as well. Searching for solutions, I came across the Failure Backends section of the resque wiki and this post: Resque: Email Notifications On Failed Jobs. That was enough to get rolling and...

Changing things up a bit.
I’m going to make an effort not to post reblogs, though I know that kind of takes away from the community aspect of Tumblr.  I’d like to focus on tech and personal posts.  I may eventually separate the posts into two blogs (like Cyclopean Computation) if I start getting enough technical entires going.

How about metal subgenre soup?
Recommendations for depressive black metal/shoegaze/blackgaze/post-black-metal whatever this subgenre is?  Stuff like Soliness, Dopamine, Amesoeurs, Alcest, or Hypomanie.  Sounds like Mogwai or GY!BE with a heavy twist?

This whole article (other than experience with Go and CGI.pm) mirrors my thoughts on Rails.  Don’t get me wrong, I like getting a paycheck because of Rails, but I wish there was more Ruby support in the Ruby community.

My letter to the City concerning recent layoffs.
In the interest of keeping things public, I just sent this letter to the City in the hopes that it’ll do some good.  My defeatist attitude tells me otherwise, but at least I can say I did something. City Leaders - I’ve opted to write rather than stand up and speak at the coming board meeting.  I would rather spend the evening with my fraternity than stir public dissent.  I’m...

Unpopular Opinion Time
Let me preface this by saying I don’t have any answers and I am just another cog in this capitalist machine.  Hell, I worked for a municipal government for 8 years.  I’m generally apolitical and apathetic about this sort of thing, but I felt the need to vent. On to my captain obvious observations: Oil companies are screwing us, in case you didn’t know.  Gas prices feel...

Workflow Change
I’ve changed my organization process yet again (new job and new lifestyle kind of requires it).  I thought I’d detail it here again.  This is my average day lately: 0600-0700 Get up sometime around here.  Get the baby ready for daycare. 0745 Roll out to daycare with the youngern. 0800-0815 Get back home, perform some semblance of exercise, shower. 0900-1200 Do work!  Generally in...

Clojure is Lisp reloaded.  Clojure has the power inherent in Lisp but is not constrained by the history of Lisp. -Programming Clojure While this is true, I think it’s probably constrained by the history of Java.  I’m still giving it a shot, though.  So far the book feels like a sneaky Java book.
